Welcome To Hell (Deluxe) Vs. Watch The Throne (Deluxe)

untitled                                                                                                                   wtt

2011 was a good year for rap, and more specifically rap duos.  On June 13 “Welcome to Hell” by Bad Meets Evil a rap powerhouse made up of Eminem and Royce da’ 5’9. was released.  Almost a month later “Watch the Throne” was released by Kanye West and Jay Z, two of the most popular rappers ever.  The two albums were alike in many ways but were different in many ways to.  In this post I will compare the two to see which was better.

Overview: Bad Meets Evil –

This collaboration between Royce and Eminem started years ago when the two did a song together titled bad meets evil on Slim Shady LP.  This album made almost a decade later is the same style.  Both dark and violent, yet funny at the same time, it incorporates their shared style of dark lyrics with fast rapping, complicated rhyme schemes, and puns galore.  The album contained the following songs

1. Welcome 2 Hell

2. Fast Lane

3. The Reunion

4. Above the Law

5. I’m on Everything

6. A Kiss

7. Lighters

8. Take from Me

9. Loud Noises

10. Living Proof

11. Echo

Overview: Watch the Throne –

From the time Kanye west was a producer for Jay-Z’s company the two have been close.  When Kanye began his own career he and Jay started collaborating and still haven’t stopped.  This album is the first full length album the two have done together and was received very well.  From documenting black struggles in the city to rapping about money the two kill it on this track.  The songs on it are as follows.

01 No Church in the Wild (ft. Frank Ocean)
02 Lift Off (ft. Beyoncé)
03 N***** in Paris
04 Otis (ft. Otis Redding)
05 Gotta Have It
06 New Day
07 Prime Time
08 Who Gon Stop Me
09 Murder to Excellence
10 Welcome to the Jungle
11 Sweet Baby Jesus (ft. Frank Ocean)
12 Why I Love You (ft. Mr Hudson)

Bonus tracks:

13 Illest Mother******* Alive
14 H*A*M
15 That’s My B****
16 The Joy (ft. Curtis Mayfield)
Round one: Rappers
Watch the Throne Features Kanye West and Jay-Z.  Jay Z has long been proclaimed the king of New York and a true gangster.  His music is real OG and nobody can deny that.  His flow on this is as good or better than always.  Kanye west on the other hand is much newer to the rap game and has received a reputation as not only being a jerk and wannabe gangster, but in recent years his music has gone from great to mediocre and he is still an egomaniac.  Bad Meets Evil on the other Hand features Eminem and Royce da 5’9.  Eminem is considered by most the best rapper in the game and for good cause.  His music on this album is typical Eminem.  Royce is a much less known rapper and member of slaughterhouse but he is still one of the realest in the rap game and every rap fan knows how good he is.  Sadly though Kanye and Jay -z Are an amazing duo, Eminem and Royce are just 2 real 2 lose.
Winner: Bad Meets Evil
Round Two: Album popularity
Although both debuted at No. 1 on the billboard top 200, “Welcome to Hell” sold 700,000 while “Watch the Throne” sold over 1,537,000 copies.
Winner: Watch the Throne
Round Three: song content –
Many rappers have a main theme or something they include in many of their songs.  In “watch the Throne” that varies between black inner city life, to money, to the rap game or even love.  In songs such as “Murder to Excellence” or “made in America” they discuss life in this country and cities for blacks and the poverty stricken areas of cities.  In songs such as “Who Gon’ Stop Me” or “Welcome to the Jungle”  or “No Church in the Wild” they discuss the modern rap game.  In “Why I Love You”, and “Lift Off” they discuss love and women.  In “Welcome to Hell” the lyrical content doesn’t vary as much.  Sticking to their dark reputations Em and Royce rap about their spots in the rap game, but mostly they just show off talent, without much contnent behind it.  “In songs such as “lighters” or “Echo” they deliver inspirational confidant tracks, but that is not the norm.
Winner: Watch the Throne
Round four: Rapping skill
Jay -z and Kanye kill it over sick beats, especially in “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Who Gon’ Stop Me”.  Both are known for their lyrical ability, unfortunately, they pale in comparison to Eminem and Royce who are also both known for being the best lyrical artists in the game.  utilizing every kind of rhyme imaginable, metephors, allusion, and more they are unbeatable, for example “I’m Gonna treat these shell casings like a soccer ball, Imma kick the ballistics” , or “Tell lady gaga she don’t have to work at the post office, She’s already a mail (male ) lady” or “Ill push her  out my aspen and tell her to get outta dodge (dodge aspen).
Winner: Bad Meets Evil
Round five: singles
Every album is defined by its pre-released singles, which are usually considered to be the best songs off the album.  Bad Meets Evil released two “Lighters” and “Fast Lane”.  Lighters is a confidant song about overcoming adversity, much like “not afraid.”  “Fast Lane” is a stunning lyrical masterpiece that shocks with its speed and intensity.”  Watch the Throne released ******* in Paris, a controversial song due to its use of racial slur in the title, nevertheless a smash hit.  They also released “No church in the Wild” which may not have been a huge commercial success, but is a very good song and one of the best on the album.  They released five more singles after that, almost half the album, unfortunately this seems like a mistake, since that many seems like overkills, and makes the album mean less.
Winner: Bad Meets Evil
Overall Winner: Bad Meets Evil
To conclude both are great albums.  “Watch the Throne” was an amazing album which received more commercial success, but talent wise, “Welcome to Hell” edged them out due to Eminem’s and Royce’s Unbeatable rapping.

Top 10 album covers

An album is made or broken by the music in it, but a huge supporting factor is the album cover.  Here I have compiled a list of the top 10 album covers from rap.  They will be judged based on coolness, meaning, and how they relate to the music.

10. “God Forgives, I don’t (Deluxe)” – Rick Ross

gfid

This album cover is purely cool, as it portrays Rick Ross as a godfather-esque figure, much as the title implies.

9. “All Eyez on Me” – 2pac
2pac

since his death many album covers of 2pac have become iconic, but this one stands out as the coolest picture of him, flashing a west coast sign over a black background.

8. “Long Live A$AP” – A$AP Rockey

asap

Featuring A$AP Rockey wrapped in a flag and looking down, this album cover is intriguing, ambiguous and stylish.

7. “Before I Self Destruct” – 50 Cent

50

50 Cent looks angry? What is his face doing? Self destructing that’s what.  The album cover coincides with the name of the album and looks awesome.

6.”The Carter IV” – Lil Wayne

tha carter

This album cover goes along with the theme of Lil’ Wayne’s last album cover which featured a tatted baby in a suit.  This is Lil’ Wayne as a young boy looking dope at a young age

5. “Straight Outta Compton” – N.W.A.

nwa

This group photo of a shot looking up at the member of N.W.A. has becoming iconic of both west coast and 90’s rap.

4. “good Kid m.a.a.d. City” – Kendrick Lamar

good kid

This album cover is meant to represent the poverty and low standard of living in Compton and other cities.  The crappy car in the crappy neighborhood proves the point well, and also coincides with other parts of the album.

3. “Slim Shady LP” – Eminem

sslp

This album cover seems cute and childish at first with its bright moon, colorful writing, and purple color.  That is until you see the gloved man in the background and the body in the trunk.  This cover also goes along with the song ’97 Bonnie and Clyde.

2.“American Gangster” – Jay Z

cropped-jz2.jpg

This cover in keeping with Jay-Z’s gangster persona, puts him in place of Frank Lucas in a famous shot from the movie American gangster.  This picture Is so cool it has to be included.

1.

lad

Biggies last album before his death, and one of the best in the rap game, this album cover has become an icon of rap music.  What is more haunting though is that weeks before its release, biggie was murdered, making him standing by the hearse, and the album name more haunting.  No matter what this album cover will always be iconic.

Top 10 Eminem Songs

“I say what I want to say and do what I want to do.  There is no in between.  People will either love you for it or hate you for it.”

Rap has seen many different artists and groups.  many are unique and many are good.  That being said none can compare to Marshall Mathers.  Going by the stage name Eminem, he took the rap game by storm in the late 90s and has not let up since.  Eminem oozes talent, whether free styling or writing verses, he is unbeatable.  For that reason I decided to rank his top 10 songs.  For this list I will only be counting songs that appear on Eminem albums, so Bad meets Evil and D12 are excluded.

10. “Sing for the Moment” – Eminem Show

One of Eminem’s deeper songs, this song talks about the reaction to his music by parents, the media, and the public.  He talks about broken homes and abused kids and how music is an outlet for their pain.  He also contrasts how his inappropriately violent explicit lyrics are criticized, but domestic abuse and broken homes are ignored and the public turns a blind eye to them.  He justifies his actions, claiming he never asked to be a role model so stop idolizing him.  He recollects trouble with the law and the public’s reactions.  The song is set over the beat of “Dream on” by Aerosmith, and also uses the hook.

9. “We Made You” – Relapse

Even though Eminem’s 5th album wasn’t popularly received, this song on the album stands out as above average for that album and was received well.  More immature than angry as he is in most songs this song starts off with a catchy beat and features Eminem rapping in a slightly accented voice (which he was later criticized for as it got annoying to some).  The main point of the song is that it’s ironic that all these people are judging Eminem for what he says and does, but the only reason he is famous is because they made him famous.  He then gives examples of his offensive behaviors by making immature yet funny references throughout the rest of the song, talking about everyone from Sarah Palin to Jessica Alba.

8. “Like Toy Soldiers” – Encore

The first serious song included on this list, it is one of Eminem’s song where he shows his true emotions without acting arrogant or offensive.  Set over a drum beat resembling that of what an army would march to, Eminem raps about problems and fighting in the rap game and how it is tearing them apart.  He refers to such beefs as 50 cent and Ja Rule, Dr. Dre and Suge Knight and more.  The chorus of the song talks about how they are like toy soldiers fighting and will eventually all “fall down” if it continues.

7. “Not Afraid” – Recovery

Just barely edging out “Spacebound” and “Cinderella man” for this spot, this song from recovery is an uplifting and inspirational song in a way only Eminem could do.  Especially fitting for this album, as it talks about his recovery from drugs, the song could mean so much more, becoming a general anthem of overcoming problems.  What makes this unique is Eminem’s personal touch.  Most inspirational songs just talk about hope and things getting better, Eminem does this in an angry way coming across more as “**** the world” as he says in the song.  The song can be used to help anyone who is down, but not gonna stay down.

6. “My Name Is”  – Slim Shady LP

“Hi my name is…”  This phrase skyrocketed Eminem from anonymity to that crazy blonde guy we all know.  Released in 1999 this is the song that made Eminem a household name.  Much like “I’m Back” this song is from the slim shady persona, and as such it is immature and humorous.  He Uses the song to show off his skills as a rapper and throw insults at other artists and generally offend the public.

5. “Rap God” – Marshall Mathers LP 2

The most recent song on this list, this song shows off how Eminem has honed his abilities over the years.  The song is Eminem freestyling for 6 minutes almost to fast to understand.  There is no theme of the song, instead it is a torrent of every rhyme imaginable, clever metaphors, and unbelievably fast rapping.  The song is included because it is his mos wordy song and his most impressive song talent-wise.

4. ” The Real Slim Shady” – The Marshall Mathers LP

“My name is may have been Slim Shady’s introduction, but this track off Eminem’s second album was his best work ever.  featuring one of the best beats Eminem has ever used, this track has Slim going crazy calling out imitators, throwing jabs at celebrities, and even his ex-wife.  He addresses how ridiculous it is that his music is taboo because he talks about sex, even though it’s something that happens all  the time, and most kids learn about at a young age “they’ve got the discovery channel don’t they.”  He also calls out how TV and movies can get away with the same things he is demonized for, “oh but it’s okay for Tom Green to hump a dead moose.”  He then throws disses at Britney spears, Christina Aguilara, Limp Bizkit, Will Smith, and more.  The song is good because of how unique it is and how it starts off a Slim Shady legacy that is still around today.

3. “Stan” – The Marshall Mathers LP

Eminem has a lot of funny, offensive songs of him being crazy.  This is not one.  Many people were shocked when Eminem came out with this song addressing issues of mental health and domestic abuse.  Stan tells the story of Stan Mitchell, Eminem’s biggest fan.  The song is told through letters Stan writes to Eminem.  The letters start off normal, but soon devolve into madness.  He talks about his pregnant girlfriend, his obsession with Eminem, he says he has all his posters, all his songs, tattoos of Eminem’s name on his chest, knowledge of Eminem, concerts he’s gone to, he dyed his hair to look more like Eminem.  It is implied that Stan is gay and is in love with Eminem, “we should be together to”.  Unfortunately none of these letters reach Eminem in time and Stan records one last message that Eminem will never get, a tape of him in his car, drunk and high, with his pregnant girlfriend in the trunk.  The tape never reaches Eminem because Stan drives off a bridge.  The crushing last verse is Eminem’s response to the letters, unaware of his recent suicide, telling Stan he is flattered but he should take it easy, telling him that he should take better care of his girlfriend, and finally sending him an autographed hat.  In the end Em comes to the awful realization that the letter will never reach Stan.  This song features what may be the best hook of any Eminem song ever, a sad lonely verse by British singer Dido.  Eminem has also preformed this song with Elton John.

2. “Till I Collapse” – Eminem Show

Though not as deep as the last song, This hit of Eminem show is raw talent, Eminem in his prime.  It starts out over a slow drum beat ratcheting up the tension, then Eminem takes it away rapping in a voice that not yelling, but so angry and hard you can hear the restrained rage behind it.  Eminem Talks about all his Enemies in the rap game and how it doesn’t matter and he will never give up.  The song’s message isn’t to deep, but the way it’s delivered is insane.  Eminem has some of his best verses on this track, The entire first verse utilizes the same internal rhymes coherently, a skill that is extremely hard to master.  For me this song is so special because it is the first Eminem song I ever heard.  I still remember to this day sitting in my bedroom as a 10 year old, hiding my iPod from my parents ( who thought rap was the devil’s music) and playing the song and knowing my life had changed forever.  The song is the pinnacle of what a rap song should be.

Honorable Mentions

“I’m Back”

“Criminal”

“The Monster”

“Space Bound”

“White America”

1. “Lose Yourself” – 8 Mile soundtrack

Though other songs may have made him famous, this song made him number one.  This is not only the best Eminem song, it is the best rap song ever.  The song from the 8 Mile soundtrack detailed Eminem’s life and rise to fame.  From starting off battle rapping in clubs where he was so scared he choked and barfed, to being so famous he had no time for his family.  The song features one of the most recognizable beats in the history of rap, slow and rhythmic with a piano riff in the background.  Eminem’s rapping features his usual continual use of internal rhyme.  The song is one of the most inspirational ever, and makes you feel like you can achieve any dream.  This song is also where i got the name of my blog.  As he describes how nervous he was he said ” there’s vomit on his sweater already, moms spaghetti.”  That’s where the name comes from.  This song will ensure Eminem’s legacy lives on.

Hot New Rap Music

With all the new music coming out it’s sometimes easy to miss new music.  In this post I will be talking about some of the newest rap songs released in the past month.

“i” – Kendrick Lamar – Single

This song by Kendrick Lamar, like much of what he releases, was not a typical rap song for several reasons.  The song starts out with an upbeat happy sounding beat that utilizes an upbeat tempo.  He starts rapping in a high pitch voice about what he’s been through and overcoming it.  The chorus of the song sums up it’s theme of self acceptance and pride with ” I love myself.”  The song discusses that the world is in a state of fighting and anger, and that it’s hard to get along with other people if you can’t learn to love yourself.  The song was released in late September as a single for his new album coming out.

“Till It’s Gone” – Yelawolf – Single

Much different in tone then “i”, this song is also very unique.  This song continues with his southern, country style rapping.  The beat is a country sounding beat that utilizes guitar.  He starts this song out angry and threatening saying he will no longer be used or played.  The theme of the song is him talking about how he has been used by someone, and he will will no longer be played.”  The song was released in late September, and has become so popular it was featured in an episode of Sons of Anarchy.  The song was released in late September as a single for his new album.

“Paperwork” – T.I. – album

The king of the south is back in 2014.  Released on Oct. 27  T.I.’s new album has been long awaited due to the popularity of his singles that have been released.  The summer was filled with singles for the upcoming album with the likes of “No Mediocre” and “About the Money.”  The album features a wide variety of collaborating artists with singers like Skylar Grey, Chris Brown, and Pharrel.  He features new upcoming artists like Iggy Azalea and Young Thug.  he also of course has classic artists like Jeezy and Rick Ross.  The album has deep songs such as “Let Your heart go” and “light em up.”  It also has typical T.I. style rap songs like “About the Money” and “No Mediocre”.  If you like T.I. or southern rap, check this album out.

“Blood Moon: Year of the Wolf” –  the Game – album

This album by The Game was released about two weeks ago and in my opinion hasn’t gotten as much press as it deserves.  As always The Game collaborates with many other artists in this album, contributing to an eclectic gathering of songs.  For example in “Hit em Hard” he features Bobby Shmurda, an artist who has just become famouse due to his smash hit recently released.  By far one of the best songs on the album is “Black on Black” featuring Jeezy as everything from the beat to the rapping by the artists is above average.

“Lifestyle” – Rich Gang – Single

I’m kidding this song sucks and this type of incoherent drivel is ruining rap.

Top 10 Notorious B.I.G. songs

“My name is Christopher C.J. Wallace (Jr.) and my daddy was the greatest rapper ever, and his legacy lives on.”

Christopher Wallace A.K.A. Notorious B.I.G. was one of the biggest rappers in the 90s, both physically and influentially.  He popularized east coast rap and is most famous for his east coast ties and feud with the west coast, most specifically, Tupac.  Sadly Biggie was killed in 1997 after only releasing 2 albums.  Another album was released posthumously, but more than that his legacy lives on through his music and reputation.  For this list I will be listing Notorious B.I.G.’s best songs.  This includes his own songs, and songs he has appeared on.

10. “Going Back to Cali”

As I said, Biggie was know for his feud with the west coast rappers.  This song however is about him returning to visit California despite his east coast affiliations.  This could also be seen as a diss toward Tupac as Biggie talks about getting women, and being rich and famous, all on Pac’s home turf.  The song features a catchy beat and hook with amazing rapping.

9. “you’re Nobody (till somebody kills you)”

Ending his Life after death (Deluxe) album, this haunting song is made more haunting and ironic by the fact biggie was killed three weeks prior to the release of the album.  The song talks about the common trend of rappers only becoming famous after being murdered, and the violence that goes along with the game.”  the song was later paid tribute to by Rick Ross in his 2014 song “Nobody”.

8. “All about the Benjamins”

This song off Puff Daddy’s album “No Way Out” merely features Biggie, But his verse was so good it has to be included.  This song exemplifies the rap lifestyle, talking about all the expensive luxuries afforded by the millions they have made, rapping.  They brag about all they have and claim that it’s “all about the Benjamins”  The song features Puff daddy, lil Kim, Jadakiss, Sheek, and of course Biggie.  It has become a rap classic over the years, which earns it a spot on this list, as it is a perfect example of the bigger picture Big was part of.

7. “Notorious Thugs”

This song of life after death is by far one of his fastest paced and catchiest, and my personal favorite.  With a repetitive and melodious hook by bone thugs n’ harmony it immediately gets stuck in your head.  Then Biggie takes it home with a sick flow.  Most specifically he starts out the verse by using seven different examples of assonance rhyming dangerous, bang with us, angel dust, notorious, love to bust, and strange to us. Then nine more with the “en” ending.  This style of rapping can later be seen with rappers like Eminem, speaking of whom…

6. “Dead wrong” (Feat. Eminem)

This song is by far the best off of born again, an album released posthumously in 1999.  It is a typical song, threatening anyone who messes with him, (the west).  What makes this song so unique is the verse by Eminem at the end.  The song was released in 1999, that is when Eminem was nowhere near as famous as he is now.  His only album out was “slim shady lp.”  The collaboration is so unique because it features two rap powerhouses from the 90s and the 2000s.  Sadly the two never again got a chance to collaborate, but Eminem did appear on a remix done posthumously for it has been said.

5. “Who Shot Ya”

This Song off Ready to Die is a classic diss with darker implications.  Before his fatal shooting in 1996, Tupac was shot in 1994, and survived.  There were rumors that the shooter was sent by Bad Boy Records and the East coast.  This song has been considered by some Biggie claiming they did, and by others just a taunt.  It features a sick flow by biggie and some amazing disses.

4. “Big Poppa”

This song off Ready to Die features Biggie rapping seductively over a slow beat.  He talks about womanizing and all the ladies he gets.  This song differs from his general violent disses or inappropriate lyrics, and instead is much slower and romantic. In 1996 it was nominated for two Grammys.

3. “Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems” (feat. Diddy and Ma$e)

This song off Life after Death, is by far one of Biggie’s best.  The song features east coast rappers like Diddy and Ma$e and a hook like Kelly price that is still famous today.  The song is much the opposite of “All about the Benjamins” with this song being about the problems faced by rappers after success, such as people wanting their money, trouble with the law, and fake friends.  Even though the song sounds light, it actually has a very deep meaning.  Both guest rappers have amazing verses but neither beat notorious B.I.G.

2. Hypnotize

The beat for this song is instantly recognizable, and for good reasons.  The first single off life after death, it features Notorious B.I.G. at his best.  His rapping in this is some of his best ever, making use of assonance, consonance, and internal rhyme throughout the song.  He raps about women, money, drugs, and guns and does it in a way that will get anyone rapping along.  The hook for this song is also probably his best hook ever.  Simple and catchy with “Biggie, Biggie, Biggie can’t you see, sometimes your words just hypnotize me, and i just love your flashy ways, guess thats why they broke and your so paid.”  This song has had all of us hypnotized with Biggies skill since 1997.

1. “Juicy”

It was all a dream.  By far the best and most in depth and personal Biggie song ever written this song is one of the best rap songs ever.  This song of his Ready to die album details his life as a [poor child coming up, and now becoming a rich rapper and getting all those things he dreamed of as a child.  The song is inspirational and talks about achieving your dreams, and lets you know you can do it no matter what.  The hook sums up the theme of the song very well, and also is very inspirational with the words “you know very well, who you are, don’t let them hold you down, reach for the stars.”  Even though Biggie died shortly after becoming famous, he still reached his goal and lived his dream, which is all anyone can ever ask for, maybe it was all a dream Biggie, but you lived it.

Top Ten Rap Groups

One thing that makes rap so unique from other forms of music is that unlike other music, rappers frequently team up, and preform together or in groups.  For this list of top ten rap groups I will be including legitimate groups, and also rappers who frequently preform together, even if they are not actually in a group.

10. Young Money

This group, spawned from lil Wayne’s record label of the same name, consists of such popular new rappers such as lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Tyga, Gudda Gudda, Drake, and more.  With two albums out already they have become very popular in the past couple of years.  Some have accused the group of being pop crap, and claims they have no real talent and only appeal to idiot teenagers of our generation.  While they are not nearly as talented as other artists on this list they are still successful enough to earn a place on the list.

9. Outkast

This southern rap group made up of Andre 3000 and Big Boi, rose to fame in the 90’s.  They gained widespread fame with the song Ms. Jackson from their 2000 album Stankonia.  Their most popular song is Hey ya!.  Outkast is a unique group with a southern spin that deserves their spot for originality and sound.

8. Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar

While these two are not in an official group the two have appeared in many songs together.  Both are upcoming west coast rappers and therefor appear on many songs together.  To date they have appeared on 4 songs together.  the most popular and best is by far Collard Greens, from schoolboy Q’s 2014 album oxymoron.  One reason the two go together so well, is the mixture of schoolboy Q’s low growling voice, and Kendrick Lamar’s high pitched rhythmic voice.

7.  Puff Daddy and Notorious B.I.G.

While not in a real rap group, Diddy and Biggie appeared in many songs together in the 90s.  Both were big east coast rappers in the 90s and Biggie was signed to Puff Daddy’s record label.  Some of the best appearances together are Victory, mo’ money mo’ problems, and it’s all about the benjamins.  they appeared together so often that they, and other rappers that appeared with them were given the nickname Puff daddy and the fam.

6. Bad meets Evil

Though this duo has only released on album, it was so amazing that they have to be included.  this duo consists of Eminem and Royce da 5’9.  Both  are at the top of the rap game and will appear on  this list again. The name bad meets evil is fitting because both are know for their nasty reputations as violent, misogynistic, angry and profanity loving.  This album is all of those things.  The album features loud angry rapping, while the two trade off verses during the songs in a fast, lyrically amazing, and unique way.  Their best song together is Fast lane, the most popular from their album

5. Jay z and Kanye West

On their own both of these rappers are some of the best in the Game.  together, however, they are one of the best rap duos in the game.  Originally Jay Z mentored West, and as such the two appeared on many albums together when Kanye was starting out such as “hate” and “diamonds from Sierra Leone.”  Then in 2011 the two released their first full album together “Watch the Throne.”  Featuring such hits as “Who gon stop me”, “Welcome to the jungle”, and “****** in Paris”  the album was a smash hit and they remain to this day one of the best rap duos around.

4. Wu-Tang Clan

Coming onto the scene in the east coast in 1993,it was founded by 10 east coast rappers, RZA, GZA, ODB, Ghostface killah, inspectah deck, Masta killa, Method man, Raekwon, U-god, and Cappadonna.  Wu-tang clan is the largest group on this list, and their size allowed for a large diversity in many of their songs.  They helped bring old school east coast rap into the forefront in the 90s.  Their most famous songs are C.R.E.A.M., Wu-Tang clan ain’t nothin to * with, and da mystery of chessboxin.  They are original because of their size, old school sound, and east coast origins.

3. N.W.A.

While Wu-tang clan was representing the east coast in the 90s, N.W.A. was representing the west coast.  The group consisted of DJ Yella, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, MC Ren, and Eazy E.  Though they only dropped on comercial album in 1988 they pioneered gangsta rap in the 90s.  At the time the group was extremely controversial for their violent and profanity laced lyrics.  This was before the days of the rap most people know, and those kind of lyrics were seen as evil and corrupt.  N.W.A. set precedents for rappers today with their music.  Their most popular songs were “Straight outta Compton” and “**** tha police.”  The second song was a protest against police brutality at the song, and was also the first song ever to draw F.B.I. attention.  Their largest contribution by far making was pioneering that kind of violent and angry gangsta rap and making way for groups like…

2. D12

Following in the steps of N.W.A. was D12.  started around early 2000, this group was founded by Eminem and his best friend and fellow rapper proof.  Besides them the group featured Kuniva, Kon artis, Swifty mcvay, and Bizzare.  The group is known for many of the same things N.W.A. was like violent and angry lyrics, and also bringing them in the 21st century.  The group released two albums before disbanding after the death of proof and going on with solo careers after that.  Their most popular songs are “purple pills”, “my band”, and “fight music.”

Started in 2009 on the mixtape Slaughterhouse, this group immediately felt the chemistry and potential among their 4 members.  The group consists of Joell Ortiz, Royce da 5’9, crooked I and Joe Budden.  The group is known for an impressively fast style, complicated rhyme and metaphor, and lyrics that are at times cool or angry (“the One” “Place to Be”), and at times emotional and discussing problems or looking back at their lives, (“Rescue me” “My life”).  The group is by far the best group in the game and frequently collaborates with other artists, such as Eminem, b.o.b., Cee-lo Green and Skylar grey.  They are Scheduled to appear on Eminems new album Shady XV in 2014.  They have earned number one for their unique style, amazing rapping, and lyrics.

MMLP 2 review and SHADY XV release

One of the biggest things happening in rap this year is the release of Eminem’s new album SHADY XV.  The CD is a mixture of new Eminem songs and other rappers signed to his label Shady Records, such as Yelawolf, D12, and slaughterhouse.  The CD is due to be released November 24.  Since this is almost exactly a year after the release of his last album, MMLP 2, i decided to do a track by track review of that one.

untitled MMLP 2 (deluxe )

1. ‘Bad Guy’ – the first track on MMLP 2 is something most fans didn’t expect, a continuum of the story from Stan, an emotional hit from the original MMLP 13 years erlier.  Stan tells the story of an obsessed fan writing to eminem, not getting a response ( until it’s to late), and killing himself and his pregnant girlfriend.  Bad guy tells the story of Stans little brother Mathew, who murders Eminem to get revenge for his percieved role in the death of his brother.  Eminem realeses and angry diss at the end, not at another rapper, but at himself.  Eminem lowers his voice after mathew kills himself and Em, and proceeds to voice all of his doubts and fears about his career, such as percieved homophobia, age, and irreparable damage to those he loves.  This song is unique because it brings all of his fears into the light, and is Eminem’s way of killing himself, literally.

2.” parking lot (skit)” – yet another continuum from MMLP 2, this skit is the end of a bank robbery commited by Em where he shoots the teller and then commits suicide.

3. “Rhyme or Reason” – This is an angry and catchy track by eminem where he unloads his anger, such as his rage at his father for leaving.  Sampling “time of the season” by the zombies, this was also one of Ems first time woring with producer Rick Rubin.  what stands out in this song are his clever and angry puns, such as “can’t even find the page i was writing on, oh it’s on the ram-page.”

4.”So Much Better”-  By far the angriest song on the album, Eminem unloads his anger on a certain unnamed woman (kim?), and some think he is actually talking about the rap game.  He claims his life would be “so much better” if she dropped dead.

5. “Survival”- my favorite off this album, Survival is Eminem rapping about not giving up and staying in the rap game.  it is extremely inspirational, angry, and profanity laced.  Set over a heavy guitar riff with a hook by Skylar Grey this this track gets you pumped up as Eminem half growls half yells over it.  His word choices and metaphors are angry and empowering, such as “throw me to the wolves and close the gate up, im afraid what will happen to then wolves when the thought of “being thrown into an alligator pit I salivate at it

6. “Legacy” – this song is one of a couple very sad and emotional songs on the album.  Set over a slow rainy beat, Eminem doesn’t yell over this one but described his sad childhood, focusing on being bullied at school and neglected at home, and how rapping helped him feel accepted and was a way for him to take his anger against those who hurt him.

7. “A**hole” (feat. Skylar Grey) – Eminem has certainly never been portrayed extremely well in the media.  In this song he flaunts his image as an A**hole who swears, did drugs, totes guns, and has violent lyrics. As the chorus says “everybody knows you are just an a**hole, everywhere that you go people want to go home.” Far from apologetic he comes across as arrogant and apathetic to what people think of him.

8. “Berzerk”- the first single of the album this song pays homage to the beastie boys with the scratchy beat and screaming.  The lyrics are fairly simple, about partying and going berserk. The beat is sampled from billy Joels “stroke”.  In my opinion this is in the top 4 songs in the album.

9. “Rap god”- not only is this one of the best and most impressive songs eminem has made, it is one of the best ever created.  Set over a techno beat its nonstop rapping.  Eminem uses rhyming to be able to speak faster and still be coherent, and is able to squeeze 1560 words into a five minute song.  The most mind blowing fact about all of this, it was a freestyle, meaning he made it up on the spot.  The coup de gra comes at 4:25 when he starts rapping inhumanly fast for about thirty seconds.  This song still blows my mind a year later.

10. “Brainless” – In this song Eminem returns to his roots as slim shady, rapping with a low angry and sporadic rhythm.  Though it has no real theme it is a nice nostalgic piece from the old days Slim Shady.

11. “Stronger than I Was” – This is another uniquely emotional song from this album.  One of his only songs where he sings instead of raps, it relays the pains of his relationship with his past wife but in a much more general sense it is for anyone experiencing being hurt by someone.  But even this sad subject matter can’t stop Eminem from his usual overcoming, fight or die spirit, saying no matter what you do to him he will overcome.  His defiant attitude is shown in such lines as “sorry if i’m late to the pity party” and  “I will be stronger than I was”

12. “The monster” (feat. Rihanna) – another one of the top 4 from this album, this one was released as the last single before its release. This is not the first time he had collaborated with Rihanna, and the two work very well together.  The song is another more lighthearted look by Em back at his work.  The best parts of this song are the catchy hook, the beat, and Eminem’s flow.

13. “So far” – In this song Eminem discusses the perks and struggles of being famous and rich.  The beat samples life’s been good by Joe Walsh, this song has some of his best metaphors and puns, such as ” i was in the bathroom droppin a football, so every time someone walked in i’d get madden” and “a creature of habit, i’m trapped  in an animal shelter with all these pet peeves” also he refers to lines from songs such as “I’m back” and “real slim shady”.

14. “Love Game” (feat. Kendrick Lamar) – possibly one of his best collaborations ever this song is a humorous look at his relationship troubles.  It samples the track ” the game of love.”  Right off the bat Eminem starts with amazing metaphors, one “Tribe called Quest” themed metaphor lasts almost an entire verse.  To top it off Kendrick Lamar ends it with an extremely catchy and verse, the kind he’s known for.  Though they have only done one collaboration I can only hope more will come.

15. “Headlights” (feat. Nate Ruess) – continuing the theme of serious emotional songs this song takes a unique look at a subject Eminem often breaches, his mom.  While he talks about his mom alot, he usually does it in a hateful and angry way like in songs such as “cleaning out my closet” and “my mom”.  In this song however he apologizes to his mother and tells her he loves her and forgives her for everything.  It has a soft and touching hook sung by Nate Ruess lead singer for fun.  This is another unique stand out track of this album.

16. “Evil twin” – follwoing that touching piece is another angry slim shady classic.  The evil twin being reffered to is slim shady and his song is his way of letting shady out.  It is angry, funny and most of all, classic shady.

17. “Baby” – this song really has no main theme, it focuses more on rhyme, a practice Em has used before in songs such as “taking my ball”.   When he does this it allows him to maximize his rhymes in place of  having to tell a story.   An example of his amazing rhymes is the assonence used in lines like “no ones more ignorant that you at four in the morning, you in the laboratory storming like theres nothing more important, mcs better consider this a formal warning, your in for it girl

18. “Desperation” – yet another song about relationships, this song, set over a heavy country guitar beat, is about a girl that he knows doesn’t love him and he doesn’t love her, buy shes with him for his fame and he’s with her for her looks.  It has a chorus sung by Jamie N Common.

19. “Groundhog day”- this song is another about how he came up and got started in te rap game. It is not as emotional as the other though, and is more of a long rhyming anecdote about how he discovered rap.  To be honest it is one of my least favorite on the album because it gets monotoneuos compared to the others but it is still a good song.

20. “Beautiful pain” (feat. Sia) – this album proved to be unique gor eminem in that it is filled with introspective and emotional songs, but this obviously stands apart as the absolute best of those.  It is at the same time crishingly sad and also encouraging and uplifting.  It has a general message to anyone hurting and needs to  cheer up.  Its hook is sing by Sia, and while this was the first time theu collaborated, it was not the last, as they again collaborated in 2014’s single “Guys over fear”. This song also stands out as the only song on the album not to use any profanity, inkeeping with its uplifting tone.

21. “Wicked ways” – Much like “a**hole, this song is eminem flaunting his nasty reputation.  He claims he is “getting by with his wicked ways” and also uses several slurs and offensive lyrics in the song to prove the point.  Also the whole no profanity thing from the last song, completely gone.  It is a very good song, as it os always nice to hear slim flaunt his bad reputation, and especially with a good beat and chorus by X ambassadors.

All in all this album is one of Eminems best and is a perfect example of his two personalities. It is shocking how he goes from the emotions of “legacy”, “headlights”, and “beautiful pain” to the sneering slim shady in “evil twin” “a**hole”, and “baby” to the angry old Eminem in “Survival” and “Rap god”.
